Hastings Boys' High School 1949 - 1952
Sir Selwyn was educated at Hastings Boys’ High School between 1949 and 1952. He was a strong academic student achieving University Entrance accredited and excelled at cricket representing the school’s 1st XI in 1950, 1951 and 1952.
He was a Hastings Chartered Accountant before building a significant investment portfolio. Sir Selwyn has had a varied and broad ranging career with many of New Zealand’s highest profile companies, including having served as Chairman of Air New Zealand Limited, Brierley Investments Limited, Carter Holt Harvey, Electricity Corporation of New Zealand Limited, Huttons Kiwi Limited and the Whitcoulls Group.
He was a Director of the Bank of New Zealand for seven years and was a Director of the original Skellerup Company in the 1980’s. Sir Selwyn has also served as a government-appointed member of the Securities Commission and the New Zealand Apple and Pear Marketing Board. His other current directorships include New Zealand Rural Property Trust Limited and Rural Equities Limited.
Sir Selwyn was Chairman of Skellerup from December 2007 until January 2017. Sir Selwyn has had extensive experience in the rural sector and has been involved with public companies either as a Director or as a Chairman for over 50 years. In 1994 Sir Selwyn was awarded a CMG in 1994 for Services to Business Management. He was knighted in 1999 the Service to Business, Sports and The Arts.
